Fancy a colour Android Amazon Kindle for under £150? You're in luck
If you're one of those people who see both e-readers and tablet PCs as a bit expensive for what they are, things may be about to change.
Amazon's next Kindle will not only be colour, but also incorporate Google's Android operating system to bring apps (and more) to the device.
And better still, according to Tech Crunch (which has got its hands on the device) the proposed price point is going to be just $250 (£155) - half that of Apple's iPad and similar premium tablet PCs.
The Amazon Kindle tablet is said to be a seven-inch device, with concrete plans in place for a 10-inch follow up if it does well. This seems to be a surprising move, as 10-inch tablets certainly seem to have better traction, but we can only assume Amazon has gone for the smaller form factor due to the size of existing Kindle e-readers.
Tech Crunch say that despite it being Android powered, the user interface is all about Amazon, so Kindle users should feel at home. But you'll find apps for music, movies, an app store - but it's not about Google. Amazon has completely skinned the OS to its own liking and only apps on the Amazon app store will be downloadable (no Android Market, it seems).
Broadband Genie editor Chris Marling said: "This sounds like an absolute winner. Both Kindle and Android have become trusted brands, while those who don't know those names are sure to have at least heard of Google and Amazon and know them as trusted companies.
"Combining the music, audio and app capabilities of a tablet with the basic reading functionality of an e-reader brings two luxuries into one price point - and when that price point is well below £200, you have to think amazon will have a big hit on its hands."
