Social networking World Record attempt raises money for RNLI: Tweet away!
Business broadband provider Timico is today trying to break the Guinness World Record for the most comments on an online news story, while raising much needed funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
The attempt was inspired by Timico CTO and co-founder of Timico Trefor Davies, with the intention of raising £2,000 for the charity. But as more and more companies and individuals started to sponsor comments via Just Giving, that amount had already been doubled before the attempt began.
The amount of comments being aimed for is 100,000, so with comments being sponsored at £1 a time that would also raise £100,000 for the RNLI. The story went live just after 9am this morning and already has hundreds of comments.
If you want to be part of the World Record attempt, head over to the blog Trefor.net and get involved. As well as commenting and sponsoring, Twitter users are being asked to spread the word via the #comment24 hashtag, while there is also a Facebook event page set up for the attempt.
To get as many social networkers involved as possible, there are also people helping spread the word via LinkedIn and Google+.
In anticipation of high traffic, the Trefor.net blog has been moved to a five blade (60 processor) Cisco platform with a 20TB EMC storage area network, while having 10Gb Ethernet internet feeds and IPv6 support. That shouldn’t go down in a hurry.
