Great news if your already a customer... not much good to those who still can't even get broadband though... 3.5 miles for a large town, 17 miles from a mid sized city and we still can't even be given a standard broadband connection due to their being no cable in the area and the phone lines not being able to handle it... Satellite broadband, through the nose prices it is I guess, either that or we make do with our dongle and live with it :-/
120Mb broadband on it's way to Virgin Media customers
Virgin Media has today announced it will be upgrading it’s fibre optic broadband network with the roll out starting as soon as next month. Virgin Media aims to make the changes over the next 18 months and claims customers will see significant increases in speed with the top package hitting an impressive 120Mb.
As well as setting a new record for the fastest broadband speed in the country, Virgin Media will also be increasing the speed of all it’s existing packages. Virgin Media claim that over four million households will see their speeds double. below is what you can expect at some point over the next 18 months if you are an existing Virgin Media customer:
- 10Mb increased to 20Mb
- 20Mb and 30Mb increased to 60Mb
- 50Mb increased to 100Mb
- 100Mb increased to 120Mb
This is all pretty impressive stuff which should see the UK shoot up the international rankings and close the gap on the broadband power houses of South Korea, Japan and Sweden.
The Prime Minister David Cameron was happy to hear the news from Virgin Media and stated: "I welcome this announcement from Virgin Media; it will provide a great boost for the economy and change the way many households, consumers and businesses use the internet. Rolling out superfast broadband across the country is a critical part of our plan to upgrade the UK’s infrastructure and build a new and smarter economy."
