Virgin Media 100MB rollout is ahead of schedule
More customers of Virgin Media are now able to get faster broadband thanks to a 100MB high-speed connectivity masterplan that’s currently running ahead of its planned rollout schedule.
Four new areas have been added to the list of homes getting boosted services, with account holders in Bromley, Dundee, North Hawkfield (North East Somerset) and Staverton in Gloucestershire all now having access to the speedy 100MB option.
In addition, Virgin Media says it is currently carrying twice the volume of online data compared to just two years ago, which is in the main due to an increased use of everything from connected TVs and computers through to games consoles, tablets and smartphones. The cable broadband provider reveals today that, during peak periods, internet traffic exceeds over three quarters of a terabit per second.
Meanwhile, the company is also separately embarking on a significant programme that should boost the broadband speeds of over four million households over the next eighteen months. Subscribers to Virgin Media’s current 10, 20, 30 and 50MB services will see their speeds at least doubled, with 100Mb customers seeing a significant increase to 120Mb from the summer. This is currently the fastest widely available broadband in the UK.
Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media said: “Soon, half the country will be able to get superfast 100Mb broadband from us. Reaching today’s milestone puts us ahead of schedule as we help propel the UK up the global broadband rankings.
Broadband is coming of age as more people give up on slow DSL in favour of superfast fibre optic speeds. Virgin Media was confirmed as the fastest by Ofcom just last week, this along with our fantastic TiVo TV service means we have an incredible combination that lets our customers enjoy the digitally connected world to the full.”
