Bored with your smartphone? Then get wood!

Bamboo smartphoneForget the next edition of the Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or any of the HTC handsets, because you may soon be getting ready to buy your first bamboo mobile smartphone. Yes, that’s right, Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, a 23-year old design student based at Middlesex University has created the high-end device from bamboo.

Set for a UK launch later in the year, the smartphone comes complete with a case of hardened bamboo, which as you can see from the accompanying photo, looks rather good on the eyes. If you tire of breaking your traditional plastic handsets then the bamboo model looks set to be far more durable.

Called the ADzero, the phone will run the ever-popular Android operating system and will also reportedly boast a specification that will be up there alongside other leading smartphones from major manufacturers. There will be some innovative features on-board, with a neat little ‘ring flash’ concept that means the flash completely encircles the lens, thereby producing a better quality low-light shot.

Woodhouse has been working hard on the handset during the final year of his design course after being disappointed by what was on offer with the current range of traditional plastic and metal smartphones out there. An investor has since come on-board to help with financing and the phone now looks to see the light of day in just a few months time. So, if you’re bored of the traditional plastic casing of your current model then maybe it’s time you got wood…
