The BBC has taken measures to relaunch its popular catch-up TV service iPlayer through the Nintendo Wii console.
Long-term owners of the Wii have been able to receive the dedicated iPlayer Wii channel since April 2008, provided their console was hooked up to a broadband connection. However, since its launch many users reported serious problems with the original interface which disrupted viewing and made it very difficult to catch-up on content.
Now, back with a new interface, all Wii owners are able to download the latest version from the console’s online shop for free. It’s also possible to access the catch-up service on Sony’s Playstation 3 console.
Erik Huggers, director of Future Media and Technology at the BBC described the update as a “faster, high quality and improved viewing experience”.
Recently, rival broadcaster Sky admitted its Sky Player service available through the games console Xbox 360 was also experiencing hiccups. Because of high demand Microsoft were forced to temporarily suspend the service although this has now been rectified.
