Carphone Warehouse swallows Tiscali whole

Carphone Warehouse, parent of fixed-line broadband ISP TalkTalk has bought out its troubled rival Tiscali for £236million in cash.

The deal, which is due for completion at the end of June, sees the creation of a broadband giant with TalkTalk now boasting over 4.25 million customers covering over 25 per cent of all UK households. The company is now in an ideal position to upsell services to its newly acquired customers, including the holy grail of 'triple play' - mobile, landline and broadband.

The deal has been agreed shortly after rumours began to spread that Deutsche Telekom is looking to offload its UK mobile broadband division T-Mobile, perhaps selling or merging with another mobile broadband provider in the UK ( 3 and Orange have been suggested as likely candidates), so the UK broadband market could be set to lose two providers in a short space of time.
