BBC releases iPlayer viewing trends for 2009

The BBC has released a batch of interesting statistics concerning use of its catch-up TV service iPlayer in 2009 in the wake of its second birthday on Christmas Day.

Throughout the year the broadcaster found users who accessed the service through a Mac or a PS3 were more likely to catch-up on comedy programmes. Meanwhile, those watching on a PC or through the Virgin Media platform were more interesting in view drama.

The highest viewing figures in the year were for Top Gear, with one particular episode pulling in and audience of 1.7 million. Meanwhile, November saw the largest user base for the service with 88.2 million programme requests in total.

Speaking on the statistics, Erik Huggers, the BBC's Director of Future Media and Technlogy, commented: “Whether it's watching Eastenders on your PC during your lunch break, listening to Desert Island Discs on the bus or watching Mock The Week in bed, viewing patterns chance depend on time and location of the audience.”
