You guys are lucky you aren't in Australia! Your broadband might be a long way behind Japan's, but you're still far in front of us. At least some of us can get 15Mbps now, but still a lot of the country are paying $50 per month for less than 1Mbps.
In fact today our government announced that we'll be getting Fibre to the Home with speeds up to 100Mbps. It will start soon, but not be finished for 8 years!! When Japan already has 160MB it makes you wonder.....

Japanese consumers treated to worlds fastest 160Mb broadband
A broadband operator in Japan is putting the likes of UK internet service providers (ISP) to shame after it announced the launch of the world's fastest consumer broadband.

Offering speeds of up to 160Mb, Japan’s largest cable operator J:Com has confirmed it’s using DOCSIS 3.0’s channel bonding technology. That may sound a little too technical for most, but the important thing to acknowledge is this is similar to the technology Virgin Media is currently using to serve its 50Mb product. So then, the hints of possible 100Mb, 150Mb or 200Mb download services may not be that unrealistic after all.
As a guide, for the ultra-fast 160Mb consumer broadband, J:Com charges its Japanese customers 6,300 yen per month (including tax). That’s the equivalent of a very reasonable £42 per month – practically the same monthly subscription cost Virgin Media currently charges UK users for its 50Mb service. So, it looks as if the UK still has a lesson or two to learn on pricing too!

LOL - you guys in Australia are lucky you aren't in South Africa! Our fastest available ADSL is 4Mbps, and we pay, at minimum, R59 per GB (AUD9). Only corporates and housing complexes get fibre, and we only have 1 landline provider. A 4Mbps ADSL connection with a 10GB cap will set you back a minimum of R1027/mo, or AUD157......... check out www.hellkom.co.za , it's a real eye opener :P
