Northern Ireland promised faster broadband speeds by 2011

A £48m pound investment scheme looks set to improve broadband speeds for thousands of homes and businesses in Northern Ireland over the next eighteen months.

Properties in both urban and rural areas will receive a broadband boost thanks to a hand-out from internet service provider BT as well as other various public funds, including some from the EU.

By May 2011 North Irish businesses in urban areas are being promised a minimum download speed of 10Mb, whilst rural businesses will be promised speeds of at least 2Mb.

Speaking on the development, Arlene Foster, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment commented: “Broadband is an enabler – use of these new services will enable our businesses to increase their productivity, improving the competitiveness of the economy as whole.” According to Foster, improvements to broadband networks in the area could create up to 1,000 jobs per year.

The improved fibre optic network will see 166 telephone exchanges upgraded along with an additional 1,176 new broadband access points.
