Research reveals senior citizens have an increased appetite for broadband

Thursday 20 August 2009 Comment

The number of senior citizens and those over-50 finding use for a broadband connection and even using VoIP services has shot up. Recent statistics show 90 per cent now feeling comfortable enough to use a broadband connection to surf the net.

Using research from Just Retired it was found most over-50s use a broadband connection to keep in contact via email to family and friends, whilst a large 65 per cent feel confident enough to use the internet for shopping.

Although these figures are less impressive among over-65 year olds, Nancy Johnson, technology and digital inclusion development manager at Age Concern recommended widespread eduction for older people on the internet could spread the confidence even further: “Access is important, but the key to getting older people online is making sure education and training is available to demystify online technology and also demonstrate the potential benefits of going digital.”
