Sky confirms it will broadcast 3D Premier football this year

Sky bosses have confirmed the provider will be broadcasting Premier League football matches by the end of the year as part of content for a new, dedicated 3D TV channel.

In order to view content in 3D individuals will be required to purchase a dedicated 3D-TV, wear 3D glasses and view broadcasts using a Sky HD set-top box.

Speaking on the service, Darren Long, Sky Sports’ director of operations, revealed: “We’ve spent over 18 months recording 3D content, and sport works very well… Sport is all about emotion, and seeing it in 3D adds to the experience… It’s been amazing showing people 3D footage as we tested, and seeing the amazing expression on even the most cynical person’s face. We now believe the time is right for this technology to move into the living room.”

According to a report by the London Evening Standard, all of the major TV manufacturers are planning to launch dedicated 3D models this year. First up will a release by LG who will launch their model in April.

Sky isn’t the only the one planning 3D sports broadcasts either. The BBC has also hinted it hopes to cover some of the 2012 Olympic games in 3D and will make content available on mobile phones.

3D tv will be amazing but sky do seem to be cashing in on this heavily, hopefully they wont charge any more for the dedicated 3d channel as purchasing sky HD on top of a new tv and paying sky hd subscription on top of the cost of the 3d glasses will surely cost enough.
