Time Warner to split from AOL

Time Warner has announced it is to split from its AOL division later this year, following reports it intends to focus on its role as a pure content company focussing on cable channels, film studios and publishing houses.

Back in 2000 Time Warner merged together with AOL in an impressive $147bn (£92bn) merger, but despite high hopes for a successful business, the relationship never blossomed as hoped. The split means, once again, AOL will become a separate company. Currently, AOL's UK internet access customers are owned by The Carphone Warehouse.

Speaking on the separation, Time Warner chief executive, Jeff Bewkes said “AOL will have a better opportunity to achieve its full potential as a leading independent internet company.”

The BBC has suggested the main reason for AOL's decline is that it thrived on dial-up internet access which peaked in 2002 and has been dying out ever since.
