Track Santa Claus in 3D tonight using Google Earth

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) is teaming up with Google tonight to offer a 3D view of Father Christmas' progress, without having to download Google Earth separately.

As part of a project which has been ongoing since 2004 visitors to the site will be able to access Google Earth using a plug-in on the NORAD website rather than the Google Earth client.

The tracking site proved popular last year with more than eight million people across the globe viewing progress on Christmas Eve. It will also be possible to access the information through a mobile phone by visiting the dedicated mobile site or viewing update's by NORAD on Twitter.

Speaking on the site, Brian McClendon, VP engineering and Bruno Bowden, senior software engineer explained: “... you'll be able to follow Santa in Google Earth's immersive, 3D environment directly within your web browser. We though hard about the different ways we could improve the Santa tracker and after a year of planning, we think this year's will be the best one yet.
