Troubled Tiscali sees subscriber numbers fall

Internet service provider (ISP) Tiscali UK has released its latest set of results for the fourth quarter of 2008 (Q4). Currently experiencing both a difficult financially spell and an uncertain future, the UK arm of the Italian-based communications company is currently struggling to find a buyer to save its failing business.

It’s no wonder then figures show another decline in its broadband (ADSL) subscriber base with a fall from 1,774,000 in the third quarter of 2008 to 1,768,000 in Q4. On the upside however, in comparison to the difference between Q2 and Q3 2008 the slump isn’t as drastic. During this time figures showed a considerable drop of -64,000.

Tiscali now has approximately 827,000 broadband customers on its unbundled (LLU) platform – significantly lower than the 889,000 predicted in the previous quarterly results.

It’s been a while since any significant fresh developments on the selling of the UK arm of Tiscali. Earlier in the month it was announced crucial talks with potential buyers, BSkyB had fallen through. Key lenders for the company agreed to put a hold on loan repayments worth £10.1 million in a hope the supplier will be helped to find its feet once again.

I'm surprised that subscriber numbers haven't fallen further given how poor their reputation for service and performance has become. My assumption is that there are many more cancellations in the pipeline but that Tiscali are so slow and disorganised that they haven't been counted yet.

Absolute nightmare of a company to deal with. Charged me for a service they never provided with, now they've got a credit collection agency after me for more. No way are they getting any. Companies like this don't deserve to survive when they provide such an appaling service

It doesn't surprise me they are losing customers including myself. The service is so appalling and disorganised - after numerous calls I have no confidence in their system at all. I am still trying to get a refund to my account for an overcharge and yet they are still trying to charge me for a service that was cancelled over a month ago.
