Virgin Media answers back to BT’s Infinity comparisons

Virgin Media has answered back to BT’s claim it’s able to offer customers a cheaper fibre alternative with a saving of up to £7.47 in light of its recently announced fibre-optic broadband product, Infinity. Announced last week, this imminent broadband product is capable of download speeds up to 40Mb and upload speeds reaching 10Mb.

Virgin Media was keen to point out a few discrepancies in BT’s product comparisons.

Although BT made direct comparisons between its new Infinity product and Virgin Media’s XXL service Virgin Media stressed its competitor only offers a 20GB data cap per month for its Option 1 package, whilst its own packages offer subscribers unlimited downloads. Virgin Media was also keen to highlight it doesn’t require customers to rent a phone line. It was also considered to be inappropriate to compare BT’s 18-month Infinity contract against Virgin Media’s shorter, 12-month deals.

In true competitive style, speaking on the announcement of BT’s Infinity product, a Virgin Media spokesperson commented: “We’re not sure why people in the UK would want to wait for BT’s 40MB service which hasn’t launched yet, when they can already get Virgin Media’s great value 50Mb service.”

BT plans to make its Infinity product available to four million homes initially, before expanding the network to serve an additional six million others by mid-2010.

Meanwhile, Virgin Media has already hinted it’s working on launching a 200Mb broadband service, although completion dates for this are a little hazy as the provider is wary of market conditions.

I got a reason for going with bt and not virgin media, i took out a long term phone contract with vm years ago in the promise that they were soon upgrading the non broadband area in slough where i live, and till this day i continue waiting to see who will be the first company to offer some kind of service, i got to say i got no hope on bt either. Surely if any of them were to be the first to offer such services where there is no service would make much more sense then cover areas where there is no customer demand, lets be honest we not talking about a couple of houses out in the sticks, but high populated prosperous pockets/areas/streets still receiving poor(kbps) or no service at all.

BT is a revenue driven company and as such will only invest if there is a potential (e.g Infinity) on the other side Virgin Media is acting silly and have no real genuine interest for new or customers can only get broadband via telephone lines! These both companies just boast about what they can provide but I see very very very slow response on actually getting on and installing the new fibre and providing these super fast broadband!
