Virgin Media cautioned by Data Protection Commissioner

After mislaying an unencrypted CD containing the bank details of 3,000 customers, Virgin Media has been found to be in breach of the Data Protection Act. The disc contained information on individuals who had expressed interest in opening a Virgin Media account in a Carphone Warehouse store.

Virgin Media itself informed the Information Commissioner of the loss of the CD and was subsequently ordered to encrypt all portable and mobile devices that stored or transmitted personal information. All companies processing personal information on behalf of Virgin Media were also warned to use encryption.

Virgin Media has confirmed that changes have already been made to conform with the ruling from the Information Commissioner's Office: "Since our internal review, we have implemented all of the requirements stipulated by the ICO," said a Virgin Media spokesperson. "Customer privacy is of the highest importance to us, so we immediately undertook a full review of our data protection policies and practices to ensure this matter does not occur again."
