Virgin Media to launch 100Mb broadband product in 2010

Internet service provider Virgin Media has announced it will be offering a 100Mb broadband service by the end of this year.

There’s no word on pricing yet, or a fixed date for launch, but once it’s rolled out the provider has pledged users will be able to download a music album in five seconds, an hour long TV show in 31 seconds and an HD movie in 7 minutes 25 seconds (although this obviously will vary depending on the length of the movie).

In its announcement Virgin Media was keen to point out it’s managed to increase its top broadband product from 20Mb to 100Mb in less that two years. It’s been topping Broadband Genie’s speed charts with its up to 50Mb fibre optic product for a good while. To give you an idea of pricing its current fastest product will set you back around £28 to £38 per month on a 12-month contract. All of Virgin Media’s 50Mb packages offer unlimited download, and we expect the 100Mb products to do so too.

Speaking on the launch Virgin Media’s chief executive officer, Neil Berkett, said: “There is nothing we can’t do with our fibre optic cable network, and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100Mb service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience.” He continued: “Just as we led the way by launching the UK’s first ever next generation service, we want to keep giving our customers the very best broadband available, by investing in technological innovation and transforming the experience they have when they are online.”

And it looks as if download speeds will be doubling up again in the near future. The provider has announced plans to extend a pilot to trial 200Mb fibre optic broadband to Coventry where it is looking to recruit hundreds of trial customers.

The pilot, which began in May 2009 in Kent, is being used to test bandwidth intensive tasks such as home teleconferencing and HD TV on-demand.
