Virgin Media to give customers a free speed upgrade

Virgin Media has announced that it is to give customers on its 4Mbps downstream 'L tier' broadband service a free upgrade to a 10Mbps service next February. Announced on the eve of a high level Government symposium on "Superfast Broadband" it was revealed that the upgrade will be served region by region and will be completed by late summer. Acting CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett said: "Virgin Media's cable network gives us a natural superiority over other broadband services and we're delighted to reward our customers with this free upgrade. We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with out cable network, and we will continue to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster broadband in the UK. We're proud to be leading the country's superfast broadband revolution." Following successful trials in Ashford, Folkstone and Dover, Virgin Media will also be introducing an upgrade programmed to a superfast 50Mb.

If only they'd done the fundamental thing and taken in to account their customer's set-top boxes aren't actually compatible with the new high-speed network. We've had no internet at all for over a week and have to wait another week for the new modem to get installed.

If I was the Project Manager for this rollout I'd be embarrased.

Prior to 1 May 2009 I contacted Virgin Media Technical Support and Customer Services and they promised that I will receive the free upgrade from 2 mb to 10 mg since 1 May 2009. I contacted Virgin Media since 1 May 2009 and initially they made empty promises and when I last spoke to them they said that the free upgrade is not yet availale and could not advise me the date when the service will be upgraded. Virgin Media are just making empty promises and not doing anyting.

Got my free upgrade this weekend, my service has gone from 2 MB to 10 MB. I didn't get a new modem, didn't have to reboot my existing modem, it just happened. No-one told me it was getting done, I only noticed it as I was downloading some files on a Peer to Peer network. So I'm upgraded, and very happy with it

I was told by Virgin that this was a 'free' upgrade. In fact what they are doing is pushing you onto the L size bundle and charging about an extra fiver a month for it. Not exactly a free upgrade!

I was shocked today (a Saturday) when I attempted to respond to a letter
from Virgin inviting me to 'phone to make an appointment for a new modem to
be delivered to me to exploit the higher-speed service (and note that my
existing modem will cease working at some unspecified time soonish).

Why I was shockec was that in seeking to make the appointment I was
casually informed that my service would be cut off rightaway and remain
cut off until the new modem was connected.

As I am a person who does business affecting lots of people, and needs
to send and receive messages daily, this was completely unacceptable
to me. I deserved continuing sevice today, and my "customers serserved
advance notice of such a cut.

This was *extremely* difficult to explain to the phone voice from
Virgin who thought that I must be interested only in downloading music
and videos (which I have never done nin my life).

Hi everyone. I would like to know is this new upgrade's a con?
I have read throught the comments and it seems some people have had this upgrade and some are still waiting. I have only just got the letter today (15/08/09) and i am shocked to see that it is free. Nothing is free with virigin, i am sure it's a con becuase people say that they are being charged. I would like the upgrade but it seems to good to be true. Is it to good to be true?

got a letter about the free upgrade but when you go to the link it just gives you a general virgin website that wants you to upgrade your cable. I cant find anywhere to put in the code they send you. Is it a con? i am very confused.

Im glad Im not the only one confused - I've had enough of virgin and I feel like saying goodbye to them. They sent me a letter to say my speed could be increased from 2 to 10Mb but I'm having enough trouble trying to get online, let alone change my details. I have had trouble for several weekends getting on line; the helpline telephone numbers are a joke and the bills from Virgin keep increasing - you're promised things on line which are a load of waffle!

I received a letter the other day regarding upgrading my internet connection for free. I went to the web address that someone stated above (www.virginmedia.com/gofaster), signed in with my account email address and clicked on upgrade in the My Virgin Media section. They said i should receive an email when the upgrade has happened. What regions have been upgraded by now does anyone know?

I received my e-mail from them and have gone through the 'registration' process, couldn't see any small print saying you have to pay more or be tied in or anything but again, like a lot of other people, i'm very sceptical of any 'free' offers, especially from VirginMedia so will be sending them a mail to confirm as such. Anyone else challenged them on the small print front? I'll let you know if i get my upgrade soon.

Instead of going faster, my internet connection is so painfully slow that I take as long as 25 minutes to get to my Homepage. I spent more than an hour on the phone while they tried to fix it last week but it is still as bad.

I was promised a free broadband speed upgrade from 2Mb to 10Mb I am still waiting at the end of November 2009
Are these empty promises not to be fulfilled.
not even an e-mail reply as to the reason for not honouring their obligation.
