Windows users to be given internet browser choice update

windows update screenFollowing a legal agreement between Microsoft and Europe’s Competition Commission late last year, millions of European Internet Explorer users will be given the option to choose an alternative browser from 1 March.

Previously Microsoft Internet Explorer was always the default browser for computers kitted up with the Windows operating system. However, next month it will be obliged to let its users install the web browser of their choice including popular alternatives Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera.

The choice will be presented in the form of a software update that will arrive automatically for all Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 customers.

It’s a move which could significantly shift internet browser trends across the globe. At the moment figures suggest over half the world’s internet users browse the web using Internet Explorer. But, with improved choice this is a trend that could shift giving competitor browsers better visibility. Speaking on the news, BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones commented on his blog: “Millions of people who never really thought about which browser to use will now be forced to make a choice. That presents Microsoft’s rivals with a unique marketing opportunity.”

In its blog Microsoft has posted screenshot previews showcasing how the software update will appear. After the initial browser choice has been completed this screen can be accessed at anytime by clicking on a desktop shortcut that will automatically be installed.

I feel that my machine has been hacked, I did not ask for this to be downloaded so in my opinion this is illegal. I am sure that if I uploaded a piece of software to anybody elses machine I would end up in court
