Bluetooth Phone: Buyers' Review
A bluetooth phone is one that is able to communicate with multiple devices through a short-range open wireless technology called Bluetooth. The technology can be used to create a personal area network (PAN) to enhance the functionality of mobile phones without having to deal with multiple cables and connectors. You can use a wireless headset, transfer photos from your phone to PC, use your phone to connect your PC to the internet, and get a wide range of other functionalities with bluetooth.
The key advantages of Bluetooth in comparison with other competing technologies are standardisation, robustness, low cost, and low power consumption. These benefits make bluetooth mobile phones extremely popular. However, there are some important differences between different bluetooth mobile phones, which can have a significant effect on their functionality and prices. Here are a few factors that you should compare different phones on before you buy a bluetooth phone.
Communication range of bluetooth phones
Bluetooth smartphones use radio waves in the 2.4GHz range to establish communication with remote devices. Ad-hoc networks called piconets are established automatically and dynamically as devices enter the communication range of the phone, and the communication link is broken when devices exit this range. The range depends on the class of the bluetooth radio used in the phone. Most of the bluetooth phones are categorised as "class 2", which means that they can communicate within a 10 metres range. Some of the high-end 3G smartphones are "class 1" and they have a much longer range of up to 100 metres. "Class 3" bluetooth radios are the cheapest and have the smallest range - just 1 metre.
Range of applications - Bluetooth profiles
Each device that is part of a bluetooth piconet can communicate with as many as seven different devices simultaneously. Moreover, each device can be a part of multiple piconets at the same time. This gives a huge amount of interoperability to a bluetooth phone, but the fact is that not all phones are able to take full advantage of this feature, sometimes even if they are top-of-the-line touch screen phones or 3G phones from a leading manufacturer.
Bluetooth functionality is categorized into different kinds of connections. Each such connection is referred to as a bluetooth profile. The phone needs to interpret these profiles to be able to provide a particular bluetooth based functionality. Most of the bluetooth smartphones in the market, even the cheap ones, support basic profiles like Headset and Handsfree. But some other profiles like Object Exchange (to transfer files), Dial-Up Networking, Keyboard Connectivity, and Printer Connectivity are not found in all phones. So if you need to run any of these applications, make sure that the phone you want to buy can support it.
Data rate of bluetooth mobile phones
Like any other communication technology, bluetooth has its own data rate limitations. The data rate of a bluetooth phone depends on its version. Bluetooth Version 1.2 has a maximum data rate of 1Mbps; Version 2.0 +EDR can go up to 3Mbps, while Version 3.0 +HS can support a rate of 24Mbps. Again, depending on the applications that you want to use, you should consider the bluetooth version being offered by the phone.
Bluetooth is offered on a wide range of phones, from basic headsets to touchscreen mobile phones like the iPhone and HTC Hero.
