New iPhone 5 rumours
Two weeks is a long time on the Apple rumour mill, so we thought we'd better take another look at all the nonsense, slathering and speculation surrounding the world's worst kept secret, the Apple iPhone 5.
Last time out we wrote about possible release dates of both October 5 and October 21, both due to rumours from retail giant Best Buy.
We also mentioned that stores in Germany were already taking pre-orders, while rumour had it that parts for the device were already rolling off the production lines in China. So what's new?
iPhone 5 release date update
Good news if you were hoping for some more October release date speculation - we're seriously starting to think about having a charity raffle/sweepstake on it.
Stephane Richard, CEO of France Telecom, has said he thinks the Apple iPhone 5 will be released on October 15. He didn't say more, except to say, "That is what we have been told". By Tim Cook? By the fairies? Your guess is as good as ours.
Another rumour, apparently from an unnamed Apple employee source, said invites will go out next week for a launch event in two weeks' time, pointing at the first week of October. But this would of course mean an actual in-store launch some time afterwards. But with typical Apple turnover (yum) in these circumstances being in the region of two weeks, this would also back the previous rumour of October 21.
It has also been said October 21 will be the UK release date - according to an unnamed sales person from O2. This apparently came from a 'customer service representative' though, so take that with as much salt as you can stomach.
But as big fans of the Daily Mail, we of course believed them wholeheartedly when they announced the Apple iPhone 5 would be released in the US on October 7. The thinking (if any went on) seems to be that if the man from France Telecom thinks he's getting his hands on it there on October 15, the Americans will get their sweaty palms on it a week earlier.
Talking of the US, it appears an internal memo at mobile carrier Sprint has told employees they can't book any holiday between September 30 and October 15 "due to the possibility of a major phone launch". I guess the Sprint top brass must've read our first rumour round-up...
iPhone 5 tech spec-ulation
Not much to go on here, except for a great rumour/cock-up from Vodafone. Seems it listed the Apple iPhone 5 in the list of handsets that are compatible with its new SureSignal box - listing both black and white versions with 16GB and 32GB variants.
If general techy rumours are to be believed, iOS 5 seems to still be on schedule for a first week of October launch. This would further back a mid-October release for the new iPhone. This was backed by a rumour that Apple Care staff have been told to expect an influx of iOS questions around October 10. Probably questions along the lines of, "why does my phone keep cutting out on calls?"
Older iPhone 5 Rumours
Things are hotting up at the Apple iPhone 5 rumour mill.
The fact there will be a new Apple iPhone, the iPhone 5, is now pretty much accepted as fact (the lost prototype was the final piece of the puzzle). Everything else, however, is speculation.
To save you the bother, we’ve trawled everything from international news sites to slathering fanboy blogs to bring you all we could find about what may or may not happen in the coming weeks with the world’s favourite smartphone.
iPhone 5 release date
With the first release rumour date (September 5) now behind us, there seems to be more traction for an October date now than a September one.
But when in October? Well, it depends which leaked Best Buy manager’s memo you choose to believe. It seems bosses at the American retail giant (think Carphone in the States) are earning a nice second income flogging their secrets to the press.
Initially we had talk of an “Apple fixture installation” hitting Best Buy stores at 6am on October 21, with managers asked to be on site at 6am (a rare, and I expect unpopular, request). As this corresponds with the iPod’s 10th anniversary, two and two was quickly added up to 100.
However, another Best Buy memo allegedly tells staff that an early October iPhone 5 release is on the cards in the week starting October 5.
iPhone 5 pre-release information
Back to the rumour mongers friend Best Buy, it seems pre-orders for the iPhone 5 at the American store could start as early as this week.
It seems German mobile provider Deutsche Telekom has started taking pre-orders for the device already though, adding weight to the fact it will probably exist at some point. This has been further fuelled by allegations that Chinese manufacturers Foxconn and Pegatron are already rolling the devices out.
However, it seems hard to believe the Apple iPhone 5 won’t ship with the new Apple iOS 4S – but that is still in beta testing phase, so not ready to be loaded onto the handset yet. This further dents any remaining rumours of a September launch.
iPhone 5 tech spec-ulation
Lots of conflicting rumours surround the screen and processor of the new iPhone 5. First, there’s a lot of talk about a bigger screen. A four-inch plus touchscreen would bring Apple’s device in line with hero handsets from the likes of Samsung and HTC – not to suggest they’re copying, of course. However, counter rumours talk of a 3.5 to 3.7-inch screen – with a larger screen following on a later model (which may actually be another iPhone 4).
As for a processor, smart money seems to be on Apple’s latest – a dual-core 1GHz offering called the A5. But there is also talk about the iPad 2’s A9 processor. Whatever happens, expect it to compete with the powerful handsets on the market right now in terms of power.
A 4G iteration of the handset has been speculated, but of course that won’t be any use to us in the UK. If the 4G spectrum auction debacle carries on as it has so far, we’ll be on the iPhone 10 or 11 before we get a sniff of 4G mobile broadband in the UK. However, there is also talk of HSPA+ support, bringing faster data downloads on 3G networks that support the technology.
