Which smartphone should I buy: buyers' guide

Deciding on which smartphone to buy can be a tricky process, often made all the more confusing due to the huge array of different deals and offers that are available here in the UK. Before you buy it's therefore essential that you spend some time doing a comparison on what's available, as well as reading consumer reviews about the touch screen phones that you're interested in. After all, there are a whole range of different models on offer at any given time, so it's important to compare and contrast the different packages.

Of course, most of us have to stick to a budget too, so using the comparison technique is a great way of seeing what's on offer versus how much it will end up costing you. It's a good idea to have a budget in mind and then stick to it, because otherwise you could end up buying something like the iPhone and a lengthy contract that might mean you're stuck in a deal or offer that you don't really need. After all, there's no point in getting what you think is the best deal if it has lots of features that you rarely use.

Which smartphone: operating system

When it comes to getting any one of many shiny new 3G smartphones, then half the fun is often getting to grips with all of the different apps and widgets that can be packed onboard these devices, and then customised to suit your own requirements. You're certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to the many and varied options, with each OS having its own advantages and drawbacks. Presently, you'll find many mobile users favour the Apple iOS, which has just been spruced up and revised.

Elsewhere, there is the Android operating system that was developed by Google and this too has become very popular with smartphone users around the globe. That also looks like increasing yet further with the release of the so-called Ice Cream Sandwich update that boasts lots of new features and a super cool new user interface. Other 3G phone options when it comes to the operating system include Windows Phone 7, WebOS and the system used on the BlackBerry range of mobile handsets. All have pros and cons and most have one or two idiosyncrasies to go with it.

If you're new to the world of mobile phones and touch screen handsets then read up on the specification and reviews and try to decide what features you think you'll need once you get the handset. You may find that there's no need for many of the more sophisticated features that come installed on these mobile phones, while others will discover that the amazing power tools that come packed inside a modern mobile will prove invaluable. If you do all of this before you spend any money then you should ensure that you end up picking the right model at the correct price.

Which smartphone: battery life

While modern 3G mobiles are undeniably powerful, all of the processing power and user-friendly functionality generally means that batteries can be susceptible to draining. So, you'll find that most smartphone owners never travel too far without the means for recharging their handset. Even models that have had rave reviews will often be plagued with the need to replenish the battery, usually on a daily basis. This is not a problem, just as long as you remember to put the handset on charge overnight.

While most 3G phones now have a whole host of onboard tools, that includes the likes of a camera plus high-powered flash, then it's little wonder that battery usage can often be heavy. If you're using other features such as WiFi and so on, then the additional strains from these tools and options will soon become apparent. Although these features are an essential part of any decent smartphone, it's important to remember that they all put additional pressure on the life of your handset battery.

Which smartphone network?

As well as looking into the technical specification of any prospective new touch screen phones, it's also a good idea to investigate what's on offer from the various network providers who deal in 3G broadband connectivity too. You'll find that there are great deals and offers available, from the cheapest low usage options right on up to the premium deals that might not be cheap, but offer lots of flexibility when it comes to things like data allowances and all the rest of it.

A comparison of 3G smartphones from different manufacturers to decide which smartphone is the best for your needs, and also deciding on your budget, is always necessary, but so too is a once over of the network provider that you're thinking about going for. Leading UK networks like 3 Mobile, Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Orange offer the latest smartphone models with their plans and contracts, but all need careful investigation before you commit to the smartphone contract that you like the look of.
