Revealed: The Best Hotel Wi-Fi for Working While Travelling

According to the UK´s Office of National Statistics, in May 2022, 24% of UK workers were spending at least part of their week working from home.

People are enjoying the extra freedom of hybrid working and, if their employers allow, they are increasingly taking advantage of the opportunity to get away more, explore, and enjoy extra adventures.

Not surprising really, after all, working with an ocean view is a whole lot nicer than sitting in a home office trying to block out the noise of the kids or your neighbours!

But if you're planning to take your remote to a new location you're going to need a broadband connection that's up to the job.

To help you quickly find one, Broadband Genie looked at over 30,000 online hotel reviews where Wi-Fi was mentioned and analysed them to see which had positive intent and which had negative.

From that, we have compiled a list of the hotel brands that had the highest percentage of positive Wi-Fi mentions. A list you can use to quickly narrow down your options.

How to get the most out of hotel Wi-Fi

As you can see, there is a good choice of reliable hotel Wi-Fi. But you still need to be a bit careful when planning to work while travelling. Make sure you consider some of these helpful tips to make the work from hotel option a reliable and safe choice.

Double-check the Wi-Fi

The above list is just a guide. Before you book a room, read the reviews for the specific hotel that you are thinking of staying in. This will help you to determine whether the Wi-fi for that location is stable and fast enough to work with.

You may also want to speak to the hotel for more details. Is there a cost to using the Wi-Fi? Is it available in your room, or only in specific areas of the hotel?

Choose a hotel that has a business centre

Lots of hotels are very keen to attract hybrid or remote workers. Often, hotels will offer a super-high-speed internet connection within their business centre. If you need the best connection speed to get work done, it's worth checking in advance if your hotel offers this.

Don't neglect your security

Using public Wi-Fi is not completely free from risk. When connecting to any Wi-Fi service that you don't control, you should take precautions, such as:

  • Check the name of the Wi-Fi network.
  • Always use websites protected with HTTPS.
  • Use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi.

For further help, our guide to using public Wi-Fi hotspots goes into more detail about safety and security.

Always have a backup plan

Because you cannot afford to let your company or colleagues down it is important to have a backup way to connect to the internet.

You might be able to get by with public Wi-Fi at a location near your hotel. Cafes and pubs often provide free internet. Free hotspots are also offered by some home broadband providers; if you have Sky, Virgin Media, or BT Broadband at home you have access to free Wi-Fi at thousands of locations around the country.

Using your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot can also be a great way to get a reliable connection. With the continued rollout of 5G across the UK, you can get mobile internet speeds that will rival even home broadband and provide a viable alternative plan should you encounter issues.
