Where to watch Game of Thrones in the UK

Game of Thrones should need little introduction. Even if you haven’t seen it yet, you will likely have heard about it, read about it online, or listened to friends talking about it. The show was a huge hit for HBO and brought fantasy epics to the mainstream.

The show finished in 2019. If you missed them first time around or want to watch Game of Thrones again, you have options. All eight seasons and their 73 episodes are currently available on NOW TV and Sky Go.

How to watch Game of Thrones on NOW TV

Game of Thrones originally aired in the UK on Sky from 2011 until 2019. The series has now finished but is still available to watch on NOW TV. NOW TV is owned by Sky and is a premium streaming service designed to compete with Netflix and Amazon. The entire eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available as part of the package.

You will need a NOW TV account and an Entertainment Pass to watch Game of Thrones. You will also need a decent broadband connection and a device to watch it on.

A NOW TV Entertainment Pass costs £8.99 per month on a rolling monthly contract. There is a 7-day free trial you can enjoy before signing up. You can use up to 6 devices per pass and watch Game of Thrones on mobile devices, laptop and desktops, smart TVs, and most streaming devices.

  • What broadband speed do I need to watch NOW TV?

NOW TV recommends the following broadband speeds:

    • Home broadband minimum speed: 2.5Mb
    • Mobile data minimum speed: 450Kbp

Cheap ADSL broadband should in most cases be suitable for viewing NOW TV (though it may struggle if you try to stream more than one show at a time). For multiple NOW TV streams, you will need fibre optic broadband.

In general, we recommend a minimum broadband speed of 2Mb to comfortably use any streaming video service at the lowest quality. But higher-quality video will demand more bandwidth, and you also have to consider whether other people in your home will be using the connection at the same time.

For further help see our guide to choosing a broadband speed and introduction to broadband speeds.

How to watch Game of Thrones on Sky Go

Sky Go is a free service for Sky subscribers that offers streaming content alongside satellite broadcasts. It’s an on-demand service that streams to the Sky Go app on many types of device. You will need a current Sky subscription to access Sky Go.

The Sky Go app can be registered on two devices at a time. You can change one device per month. The app works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktop PCs.

You also have the option of Sky Go Extra which is a £5 a month addon that adds content downloads, Xbox and PlayStation compatibility, and two concurrent streams.

  • What broadband speed do I need to watch Sky Go?

Sky does not offer any official guidance on the speeds required for Sky Go.

In general, we recommend a minimum broadband speed of 2Mb to comfortably use any streaming video service at the lowest quality. But higher-quality video will demand more bandwidth, and you also have to consider whether other people in your home will be using the connection at the same time.

Cheap ADSL broadband should in most cases be suitable for viewing Sky Go (though it may struggle if you try to stream more than one show at a time). For multiple NOW TV streams, you will need fibre optic broadband.

For further help see our guide to choosing a broadband speed and introduction to broadband speeds.

How much will it cost to stream Game of Thrones?

Both NOW TV and Sky Go are subscription services. NOW TV has its own subscription while Sky Go is a feature of a standard Sky subscription.

  • A NOW TV Entertainment Pass costs £8.99 per month.
  • A Sky TV subscription costs from £22 per month (18-month contract).
  • Sky Go Extra costs an extra £5 per month on top of your Sky TV subscription.

Game of Thrones reviews and ratings

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89% (Certified Fresh)

IMDB viewer rating: 9.3 / 10

Will I like Game of Thrones?

Game of Thrones is a fantasy epic, but is character-driven with some surprising twists and turns. This is a wide-ranging, colourful, action-packed series with a lot going on. You don’t have to be a fantasy fan to like Game of Thrones. The setting, characters, story arcs, action sequences and even the sets themselves are more than enough to draw you in and keep you hooked.

Game of Thrones was also notable for its violence and nudity. While this was in service of the story, it does mean it's unsuitable for younger viewers.
