Where to watch What We Do in the Shadows season 1 and 2 in the UK

What We Do in the Shadows is a comedy mockumentary television series about the lives of modern-day vampires, based on a 2014 film of the same name.

The first season aired in the UK in May 2019, and the second season was released in June 2020. If you didn’t see What We Do in the Shadows then there are several ways you can catch up.

Keep reading to find out how you can watch What We Do in the Shadows in the UK.

How to watch What We Do in the Shadows on BBC iPlayer

The first and second seasons of What We Do in the Shadows are available on BBC iPlayer. You’ll need to have a TV licence to watch it.

You can view it on the iPlayer website through a browser or you can download the app on a mobile device or smart TV. iPlayer doesn’t say how long the episodes will be available for, but it states that they will be on the site for ‘over a year’.

  • What broadband speed do I need to watch BBC iPlayer?

BBC iPlayer recommends the following broadband speeds:

    • Standard quality recommended speed: 1.5Mb
    • High quality recommended speed: 5Mb

Cheap ADSL broadband can be suitable for viewing iPlayer in high quality (though it may struggle if you try to stream more than one show at a time). For multiple HD streams, you will need fibre optic broadband.

In general, we recommend a minimum broadband speed of 2Mb to comfortably use any streaming video service at the lowest quality. But higher-quality video will demand more bandwidth, and you also have to consider whether other people in your home will be using the connection at the same time.

For further help see our guide to choosing a broadband speed and introduction to broadband speeds.

How to watch What We Do in the Shadows on Amazon Prime Video

The first season of What We Do in the Shadows is available on Amazon Prime Video. If you have Prime membership you can watch all the episodes for free. If not, you can buy individual episodes or the full series, but you will still need an Amazon account.

Amazon Prime Video also has the original movie that the series is based on. While not essential to enjoy the TV show, it is set in the same universe as the series.

You can watch Amazon Prime via a browser on a PC or Mac, or by downloading the Prime Video app on smart TVs and mobile devices. Amazon Prime Video is also available on a wide variety of streaming TV devices including Roku, NVIDIA Shield and other Android TV boxes, and Amazon's own Fire TV devices.

  • What broadband speed do I need to watch Amazon Prime Video?

Amazon does not have official guidance on the speeds required for Prime Video. The following is a rough guide to what speed you'll need for streaming Prime Video:

    • SD quality: 0.9Mb
    • HD quality: 5Mb
    • Ultra HD/4K quality: 15Mb

Cheap ADSL broadband can be suitable for viewing Amazon Prime Video up to HD quality (though it may struggle if you try to stream more than one show at a time). For Ultra HD video or multiple HD streams, you will need fibre optic broadband.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 94% (Certified Fresh)

IMDB viewer rating: 8.4 / 10

Will I like What We Do in the Shadows?

What We Do in the Shadows gives insight into a lesser-seen side of vampire life: one where macabre blood-sucking activities are balanced out by erotic topiary, house meetings about tidiness, and being the office bore.

Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Colin share a house, but they don’t always share the same idea of how vampires in the 21st century should behave. Living with them is Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar, who is desperate to become a vampire. Despite letting him believe that his dream will come true one day, Nandor is generally more content to keep Guillermo as his put-upon lackey.

If you like deadpan humour - think Flight of the Conchords and Hunt for the Wilderpeople - and mockumentary-style TV shows such as Parks and Recreation and The Office, then you should definitely give What We Do in the Shadows a try.
