Guide to mobile broadband and free laptop deals
As little as a year ago walking into your local high street broadband providers or computer shop and saying "can I have one of your mobile broadband laptop deals would have brought a blank stare from the shop assistant, who may even have pressed the under-the-counter panic button assuming you were about to rob them.
In September 2007 Carphone Warehouse began to offer its unique laptop and mobile broadband deals with a static broadband connection offer. It was an instant hit, not surprisingly mobile phone and broadband supplier Orange saw an opportunity to attract huge numbers of potential new customers to its mobile broadband services. So they quickly became the first mobile broadband company to offer mobile broadband and laptop deals in return for a subscription to their mobile broadband service.
Since then the market for free laptops with mobile broadband subscriptions has mushroomed on a massive scale. It seemed at first the public had difficulty in comprehending the idea that they could receive brand-new free laptops in return for only signing up for mobile broadband service. In July this year around 4% of all laptop sales were free laptops from the country's main mobile broadband suppliers. That figure has now passed the 30% mark in just six months.
Selecting the right deal
It would therefore be wise to spend a little time investigating the best deals on offer from these companies. The offers on the surface seem very similar, you put down a few pounds and the company gives you one of their free laptops. In reality these deals are very different, mostly related to the type of equipment that is being offered.
You should consider very seriously what youre laptop requirements are, or those of the person you are obtaining free laptops for as a gift. For example do you spend a lot of time playing games or watching movies on your computer? If so, a larger screen would be a much-needed option.
If you intend to perform large amounts of work with your new laptop then consider the size of the memory and the hard drive. Is the computer's capacity sufficient for you to be able to work comfortably without filling up the available space to the point where the laptop does not perform well?
You should make some enquiries by spending a little time finding out which models of free laptops are available and a quick analysis of what that particular models capabilities are before you buy.
For example, one of the units being provided by mobile operator 3 is currently the HP DV 6910. This laptop uses Windows Vista, if you don't like or have never used that platform, this unit may not suit you. On the other hand, it does have a screen size of 15 inches, which would be useful for game playing and movie watching. It also has a very respectable 250GB HARD drive and memory of 3072 MB. Dongles may be included in the package - giving you quick and easy broadband access.
Therefore, as you can see with just one model offered from one company, that it may or may not suit your individual needs. It is very important to decide exactly what you want from your laptop and not just jump into the first offer that you come across from the pretty sales assistants trying to tempt you to leap into a free laptops deal without proper due consideration.
You should also be aware that these deals are very fluid, the mobile broadband companies are constantly switching which free laptops they are offering and just how much per month you will have to pay in subscription fees. Competition may increase considerably over the next few weeks and months as each company tries to outdo the othe to be the cheapest.
This would only be good news for the consumer as they are bound to benefit from better free notebooks and free laptops with higher grade specifications. So, don't just jump in, very carefully consider your needs and compare them to the cheap offers available from individual companies.
Broadband Genie can help you make a comparison between the different UK wireless broadband providers (Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2, Orange and 3 Mobile). Not only can you compare on prices, but on many different aspects such as speed of 3G broadband. You can also read current laptop internet customer reviews and find out their 3G internet experiences, to help you decide which mobile internet package is appropriate for you.
