Leicester’s tech history
Leicester has its very own astronaut! Well, sort of. The American spaceman Jeff Hoffman attended the University of Leicester for his postdoctoral work, after which he flew on five space shuttle missions and helped repair the Hubble space telescope. Hoffman is now back as a visiting professor of physics and astronomy.
One of Leicester's most famous technology businesses is the Twycross based Rare Ltd. Founded in 1985, Rare quickly built a reputation for top quality video games, many on Nintendo consoles, including popular titles such as Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark and the classic Goldeneye. Today Rare is fully owned by Microsoft.
Leicester is also the birthplace of the electrical chain Curry’s. It was founded in 1884 by Henry Curry and originally started life as a bicycle shop.
Comparing mobile broadband in Leicester
You should have no problem finding the perfect mobile broadband service in Leicester as all four network operators provide excellent coverage. EE, O2, Three and Vodafone all provide very strong indoor and outdoor 3G signal throughout central Leicester and out to areas such as Birstall, Wigston, Thurmaston, Oadby and Enderby.
Three also offers good coverage of its speed-boosted DC-HSDPA ‘Advanced 3G’, both in the centre and to outlying areas.
4G is widely available. All networks boast of excellent indoor and outdoor coverage across central Leicester and much of the surrounding areas, however 4G does not yet have the same reach as 3G so you may find signal is not as reliable out of more populated locations.
Before buying be sure to confirm coverage, particularly if your mobile broadband device will be getting heavy use in specific locations. All the networks provide coverage check tools which can give a reasonably good idea of performance but you can also simply check using a mobile phone.
